Game Description

Wolfenstein 3D is credited with being one of the first FPS (first person shooter) games .This game was a pioneer for FPS games and has helped to shape the games that came after it. Wolfenstein 3D was developed by id Software, Inc. and published by Apogee Software, Ltd, then released in May of 1992. This game was inspired by the Castle Wolfenstein game from 1981. The game was released in 2 sets of 3 episodes; the first episode was free to garner interest in the game and the other episodes had to be paid for. The game was an instant hit and sold over 200,000 copies by the end of 1993.

Set in Nazi Germany during World War II, Wolfenstein 3D is played from the perspective of allied spy, B.J. Blazkowicz. The game starts with a captured Blazkowicz in the prison of Castle Wolfenstein. The player must then escape from the cell and search for the exit. In order to reach the next level, the player must find an exit elevator. This task is not too easy for the player who must navigate through the maze-like level and try to avoid being discovered and killed by Nazi guards. Another way to reach the next level is to fight and defeat one of the many boss enemies.

The levels are designed to look like a Nazi bunker furnished with Swastika banners and pictures of the fuhrer. As the player searches for the exit to the next level, they will come across a variety of enemies. There are Nazi guards, soldiers, mutants, and even dogs that will not hesitate take down our allied spy.

In order to eliminate the enemies, there is a variety of weapons that the player can use. Weapons include: a knife, pistol, submachine gun, and a chaingun. At the start of the game, the player is equipped with the knife, pistol, and some ammo. The submachine gun and the chaingun can both be equipped if they are found, but the submachine gun can also be taken from the body of a dead enemy.

Along with trying to skillfully eliminate the enemies, the player must manage their own health. Attacking enemies diminishes the player’s health varying on the difficulty level of the enemy. Health can be restored by finding medkits, chicken dinners, or (surprisingly) even dog food. If the player happens to die to one of the enemies, then the player returns to the initial prison cell and is given a knife and pistol with 8 bullets ready for the next try.

The game automatically gifts the player with three lives, but more can be gained by either finding the coveted extra life token or by earning 20,000 points. Points are awarded by killing enemies, finding treasure, and killing all enemies, finding all the treasure, and finishing the level under the set par time.

This game also includes secret rooms which can be discovered by activating a hidden door by pressing certain wall tiles; these rooms tend to hold health, treasure, and ammo. Although Wolfenstein 3D may seem like a simple shooter game, it has captivated millions of players with its Nazi butt-kicking action storyline.
