BARBIE(R) JEWELRY DESIGNER(TM) FOR WINDOWS(R) 95 Version 1.0 Congratulations on your purchase of Barbie(R) Jewelry Designer(TM). We have included this ReadMe file to supply you with up-to-the-minute information about the program. You may want to print this document for future reference. _________________________________________ CHANGING THE MONITOR COLOR DEPTH: To improve the appearance of the software on your monitor, you should set the monitor depth to 16-bit or higher. To do this, click on the START menu, choose SETTINGS and select CONTROL PANEL. Double click on DISPLAY. Choose SETTINGS and change the COLOR PALETTE to HIGH COLOR (or TRUE COLOR). _________________________________________ DO NOT USE PRINT'N SHRINK(TM) MATERIAL IN A LASER PRINTER AS IT MAY DAMAGE YOUR PRINTER Print 'n Shrink(TM) Material is specially designed for use in color or black and white inkjet printers. You cannot use dot matrix, laser or other types of printers other than inkjet printers. _________________________________________ IF YOU EXPERIENCE SOUND PROBLEMS: If you experience either no sound or choppy sound when Barbie(R) is talking or when going from screen to screen, you should check the sound device you are using and change it to "waveOut" if it is not already selected. (If you do not hear any sounds, first check that the speakers are plugged in, turned on, and the volume is turned up enough to hear.) To change the device to "waveOut": 1. Click on the "Start" menu. Click on "Settings". Click on "Control Panel". 2. Double-click on the "QuickTime(R)" icon 3. Click on the pull down menu and select "Sound Out" 4. From 'Choose a device for playback:', select "waveOut" 5. Exit the QuickTime(R) settings. If you still experience sound problems on your system, you can adjust the size of the sound buffer QuickTime(R) uses. To adjust the size of the sound buffers, you need to: 1. Open the Control Panels window and open QuickTime(R) Settings. 2. Select the Sound Out panel. 3. Select the WaveOut or DirectSound(R) device (depending on what is installed in your system). 4. Click on the Options buttons at the bottom of the control panel. 5. Try increasing the values (if set at 60, try 120, then 180, etc.). 6. Keep adjusting the settings until the audio problem is corrected. _________________________________________ KNOWN PRINTING PROBLEMS ON THE HP(R) DESKJET(R) PRINTERS: The paper guide for the sheet feeders on the HP(R) DeskJet(R) 340 and HP(R) DeskJet(R) 400 will not adjust properly for the 8.5" by 5.5" sheets, causing it to misfeed and possibly making the printout unusable. To solve this problem, load both the letterbead label sheets and the Print 'n Shrink(TM) material from the back of the printer when printing your designs. Also, when printing your letterbead designs, you need to select the "Manual" option in the Printer Setup screen under "Properties" in order for the printer to correctly print the pattern behind the designs to show you where to cut them out. When printing your letterbead designs on the HP(R) DeskJet(R) 540, you need to change your print settings to correctly print the pattern behind the designs to show you where to cut them out. Click on "Properties", select "Color Graphics", click on "Options", select "Cluster", click "OK". _________________________________________ KNOWN PRINTING PROBLEMS WITH CANON(R) BUBBLE JET(R) PRINTERS: If you experience crashing when printing your jewelry designs to Canon(R) BJC-610 and BJC-620, install the Canon(R) BJC-600 driver and use it when printing your designs from the software. You can download a free copy of this driver from the Canon(R) website at 'http://www.ccsi.canon.com/printers/color-1.html'. _________________________________________ KNOWN PRINTING PROBLEMS WITH EPSON STYLUS(R) COLOR PRINTERS: When printing on the Letterbead Labels and Print 'n Shrink(TM) material, some Epson Stylus(R) Color series printers will try to feed several sheets through the printer. To avoid that problem, load only 1 sheet at a time in the printer. After the page has printed, if the printer prompts you to load more paper, simply turn the printer off to clear the memory and reset the printer. _________________________________________ KNOWN PRINTING PROBLEMS WITH NEC(TM) PRINTERS: When printing on the Print 'n Shrink(TM) material, the NEC(TM) SuperScript(TM) 150c printer may lose contact with the paper at the end of the sheet. This may cause the edge of the printing to be slightly distorted. Try gently securing the right side of the paper with your finger, as it is printing so that it will remain straight when printing the final edge. _________________________________________ TAKES A LONG TIME TO PRINT: You may experience very slow printing when your monitor depth is set to 256-colors. If available, change your monitor settings to a higher color depth to speed the printing. Also, slow printing has been seen for files that were not saved. Try saving your file before printing. _________________________________________ PRINTING IS CUT OFF ON THE LABELS and/or PRINT 'N SHRINK(TM) MATERIAL: Make sure to set the paper orientation to PORTRAIT before you send the file to print. ___________________________________________ IF THE SOFTWARE CRASHES: In order to improve the sound quality while using Barbie(R) Jewelry Designer(TM), some of the QuickTime(R) settings are changed while you are using the software and restored when you quit the software. If you crash or quit unexpectedly (such as shutting down the system or using Control-Alt-Delete), the QuickTime(R) settings will not be restored. To restore the settings to retain stereo sound settings for other programs: 1. Open the Control Panels window and open QuickTime(R) Settings. 2. Select the SOUND OUT panel. 3. Change the RATE to "22.050 kHz", change the SIZE settings to "16 bit" and change your USE setting to "Stereo". 4. Exit the QuickTime(R) settings. _________________________________________ LOST PRINTER COMMUNICATION If you get a dialog box saying that 2-way communication with your printer has been lost (most commonly seen on the HP(R) DeskJet(R) 600 series), try quitting the software, re-booting your computer, re-starting the software, and turning off the music in the program before trying to print again. To turn off the music, click on the Music Note at the bottom of the screen and select No Music. _________________________________________ REGISTERING YOUR SOFTWARE: If your text is cut off on the registration screen, set your monitor to small fonts. If you want to turn the music off, click to go to another screen and turn the music off at that screen. _________________________________________ SHUTTING DOWN THE SYSTEM WHILE RUNNING THE PROGRAM If you shut down the system while running the program, the software will be terminated without saving your current jewelry designs. _________________________________________ INSTALLATION PROBLEMS: You may encounter problems during installation if there are other applications running at the time you try to install the software. If you do have a problem, exit the Barbie(R) Jewelry Designer(TM) installation and shutdown other applications that are running. Run the installation again. _________________________________________ STARTING UP THE SOFTWARE: Each system configuration is different and may affect the speed and performance. Be patient when starting the software. If it takes more than 2 minutes, try re-booting your system and starting the software again. _________________________________________ RE-BOOTING YOUR SYSTEM: If you encounter problems when using this software, it is best to re-boot the system to eliminate any accumulated memory problems. _________________________________________ TECHNICAL SUPPORT For other questions about Barbie(R) Jewelry Designer(TM), contact: In the US: 1 (888) 628-8359 (1-888-MATTEL9) In Canada: 1 (888) 633-4211 (1-888-MEDIA11) In Australia: 1-902-262-513 You can also contact Mattel on the World Wide Web: http://www.mattelmedia.com Or write to: Consumer Affairs Technical Support GA0109 Mattel, Inc. 333 Continental Blvd. El Segundo, CA 90245 __________________________________________ (P) and (C) 1998 Mattel, Inc., El Segundo, CA 90245, U.S.A.
