If you have problems running PUDDLE BOOKS: In order to run this program properly on a Windows based computer, you must do the following: If you are running Windows 3.1x, be sure you have created a PERMANENT swap file of at least 8MB (8.192K) in your Virtual Memory settings. We suggest that you do not create a swap file greater than 20,000K, as this can reduce the efficiency of Windows. [Refer to your Windows guide on Changing Swap-File Settings, by using the Control Panel]. Windows 95 normally controls your virtual memory usage and configuration, so Virtual Memory changes are usually not necessary. Turn OFF any virus scanning programs, sound scheme programs, and screen savers that might be running. Turn OFF ALL applications except for the 'Program Manager' (if you are running an alternate desktop, leave only your desktop program running). Set screen resolution to 640x480 or 800x600. (higher or lower resolutions will cause the loss of "hot spots" and other screen information) If you have 8MB of Ram, you should use 640x480 to conserve memory. [Refer to your Windows guide on Running the Setup Program or Setting Up Windows] Set the number of colors to be displayed to 256 (some color cards may require colors to be set at 65,536; 65,535; 64K; or 65K, depending on vendor) [Refer to your Windows guide on Running the Setup Program or Setting Up Windows] For Windows 3.1x users: If you are experiencing video related problems (i.e. jumbled video, missing pictures, General Protection Fault errors in a .DRV file, etc.), it may be due to your video display driver. Contact your computer vendor to make sure that the driver that you are using is the most recent release. In some instances, the Microsoft generic video drivers (Super VGA) can be used in place of the manufacturer's supplied video driver. This is true for most popular video cards such as Trident, Cirrus, Quadtel, Paradise, ATI, and others. Check with your video card manufacturer to see if the Microsoft Super VGA drivers will work with your video card. If your video card supports the Super VGA drivers and you would like to install them, here's how you install them into Windows 3.1x: - Double-click on the Windows Setup icon in the Main icon group on the Program Manager screen. - Choose Options menu and select Change System Settings. - Pull down the list of display drivers and select Other Display Drivers at the very bottom of the listing. Type in D:\SVGA and press the key. (NOTE: If your CD-ROM drive is not D, type in your CD-ROM drive letter instead) - Select Super VGA 640x480 256 Colors from the list and select OK. - Select OK to accept the new video driver. - Once Windows has copied in the new driver, select the Restart Windows button to have the new driver take effect. For Windows 95 users: - Place the mouse cursor anywhere on the Windows 95 desktop, but not on any icons, then click on the right mouse button and select Properties from the pulldown. - Click on the Settings tab. - Change the Color Palette to 256 colors and the Desktop Area to 640x480 pixels, then click on the Apply button. NOTE: If you have to change the colors, Windows 95 will most likely inform you that you need to restart Windows 95 to have the changes take place. For Compaq computers: We have encountered a problem when using PUDDLE BOOKS on Compaq machines while using the Compaq wallpaper. We suggest that the wallpaper be turned off or set to NONE. [Refer to your Windows guide for Desktop Options or Control Panel (Wallpaper)] If you still encounter a problem, try changing your video configuration to the generic SVGA 640x480 256 color mode. TROUBLE SHOOTING PUDDLE BOOKS (For Windows): (See also: Windows Installation) PROBLEM: Some animations and songs play back with jerkiness (hesitation, skips in the audio, loss of audio, skips in the animation). SOLUTION: Check that virtual memory is set to 'Permanent' and is at least 8MB. Check that you are using a double-speed CD-ROM drive. Also, check that you are using the correct resolution and number of colors. PROBLEM: You receive an error message concerning "DCIMAN.DLL" when starting up your Puddle Book. SOLUTION: Try installing QuickTime 2.02 available on your Puddle Book CD. To install QuickTime 2.02 choose "RUN" from the Start menu (on Windows 95) or from the "File" menu in your Program Manager. Enter the letter for your CD-drive followed by :\QTWFILES\QTW202\SETUP.EXE". Click OK. The QuickTime for Windows 2.02 installer will ask you what type of installation you wish. Click the button labeled "Local". Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. PROBLEM: On a machine running Windows 3.1, during start-up of the Puddle Books program you get an error message (Some examples include "Call to undefined Dynalink," "STAR3899 caused a General Protection fault..." etc.) and are unable to run the program. Possible Cause: It is very likely that your machine has a Cirrus Logic video display card that uses the 5422 through 5428 chip set combined with the 1.42 or 1.43 drivers. SOLUTION: To correct this problem, you must install updated drivers for these display cards. We have included generic versions of the most recent drivers for these cards in the "Cirrus" directory on the Puddle Books CD. However, we recommend contacting the manufacturer of your PC directly for a driver update (you will need version 1.5 or greater). The reason is that most PC makers include customized control panel software with their display drivers. If you should decide to use the included "Generic" Cirrus Logic drivers here is what you should do: 1) Enter the File Manager and select the CD-ROM drive (Usually "D:"). Make sure that the Grammar Rock CD-ROM is in the disk drive first. 2) Open the directory called "CIRRUS" 3) Find the file called "IDCHIP.EXE" which will run a program that checks to see if you have a Cirrus Logic Chip set and if so, what version. Run this program by double clicking on the file name. 4) If the IDCHIP program says you have either a CL-GD5422, CL-GD5424, CL-GD5426, or CL-GD5428 then you will find the appropriate drivers in the sub-directory with the equivalent number (For example if you get a message that says you have a CL-GD5422, you will find the drivers you need in the GD5422 directory.) 5) Open the directory for the appropriate driver and look for the file "INSTALL.EXE" and double-click on it to install the new driver. 6) Follow the on screen prompts to complete the install. 7) You will need to restart Windows to have the change take effect. Please note that Davidson & Associates cannot support these drivers and you should contact your PC manufacturer or Cirrus Logic should you experience other problems with these drivers. If you are still experiencing problems, call Davidson Technical Support at 1-800-556-6141, from 7 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Pacific Time), Monday through Friday. Published by: c) 1995 FUNNYBONE Interactive.
