Congratulations on your purchase of "Reading Blaster: Invasion of the Word Snatchers" Version 1.2c! To supply you with up-to-the-minute information, we have included the following information. VIDEO Some Windows video drivers may cause erratic behavior under certain conditions. If you experience any unusual screen activity, switch to the standard VGA mode from the Program Manager or other available drivers supplied with your video card. To change your video mode: o From the Program Manager, double-click the Windows Setup icon in the Main group. o From the Options menu on the Windows Setup box, select Change System Settings. o Click the arrow to the far right of the word "Display". You will see a list of video drivers. o Scroll through the list until you see the word "VGA". o Double-click "VGA" and follow any screen prompts. Windows may ask you to insert a disk(s) that came with your original Windows package. For more information about video drivers, please consult your Windows documentation. SCREEN SAVERS If you are running a screen saver in the background, you may experience video problems during the game. Disable the screen saver and this should solve the problem. ATI MACH32 If you are using the ATI video card and driver which utilizes the Flex Desk Utility (located in the Main program group) to change your video resolution, be sure that the Device Bitmaps option is checked "off". To change this setting: o Double click on the Flex Desk Icon. o Click on the "Advanced" button at the first dialog. o Click on the "Off" radio button under the heading "Device Bitmaps". o Choose OK twice to exit Flex Desk. o Re-start Windows. OR If the Device Bitmaps option is not in your Flex Desk Utility version: o Double click on File Manager (located in the Main program group) o Click on the Windows directory o Double click on the win.ini file o Under the "[Mach]" section heading, set DeviceBitmap=off For more information about video drivers, please consult your Windows documentation. You may also download current video drivers from the Microsoft BBS if you have a modem and suitable communications package. The Microsoft BBS number is 510-736-8343. PACKARD BELL CIRRUS LOGIC GD54 v1.3b drivers Under some high resolution video drivers such as the Cirrus Logic GD54, you may experience performance problems. If your system is running one of these drivers (check Windows Setup - Options - Display) do the following: o From the Program Manager, choose File . o Choose Run. o Type "D:\SETUP PACKBELL (your CD ROM drive letter may be different). o Setup will then make the necessary changes to the program files. The main program files will now run from the "PBLASTER" drive. If you change video drivers at a later time and wish to switch back, follow the above steps but type "D:\SETUP NOPACK". ENSONIQ SOUND CARDS If you experience sound problems with the Ensoniq sound card: o Click on the Control Panel Icon from the Main program group. o Click on the Drivers Icon. o Select "Soundscape DVD MIDI, WAVE, AUX." o Under the section "Wave Playback DMA," set "Wave A" to "O." o Click on the "Test" button and verify that the status line at the bottom says "Driver OK." o Choose "OK." o Exit the Control Panel by double clicking on the upper left menu bar. o You may have to re-start Windows if changes were made. For further information, contact Ensoniq at (610) 647-3930. IF YOU RECEIVE AN INSUFFICIENT MEMORY MESSAGE OR IF READING BLASTER DOES NOT PRINT CORRECTLY Increase the size of Window's virtual memory. Also, make sure that the virtual memory is set to permanent. For more detailed information about virtual memory, consult your Windows documentation. IF THE PROGRAM IS VERY SLOW Close any unnecessary applications, that may be running. If you have a 386 or faster processor, be sure you are running Windows in enhanced mode. Also be sure that the Virtual memory settings are active. To check the Virtual memory settings: o Click on the Control Panel Icon from the Main Menu o Click on the 386 Enhanced Icon o Choose Virtual memory and verify the settings We require Virtual memory with a 8000 KB permanent swap file. o To make changes to the settings, consult your Windows documentation. PROGRAM DOES NOT RUN FROM FILE MANAGER OR COMMAND LINE "Reading Blaster: Invasion of the Word Snatchers" must be run with a command line parameter in order to launch. If you wish to launch from the Run line, you must use the entire path name followed by the program name (rblaster.exe), followed by the line RBINTRO.BAP. The complete command line should read: D:\(directory name)\RBLASTER.EXE RBLASTER.BAP TANDY SENSATION USERS Tandy's WinMate system does not automatically create the "Reading Blaster: Invasion of the Word Snatchers" icons or launch our program. NORTON DESKTOP, KIDDESK, PCTOOLS, TABWORKS OR OTHER WINDOWS PROGRAM SHELLS If you are using a program shell other than the Windows Default Program Manager and experience trouble running the Setup installation program or launching the program, try changing the shell to the Windows' Program Manager. To change the program shell: o First make a back up of your SYSTEM.INI file. Make NO changes to this file until you have an accessible backup in case you encounter problems. o Using the Windows Accessory Notepad (or any other text only editor), open the SYSTEM..INI file located in the C:\WINDOWS directory. o Under the heading [boot], find the section "Shell=". o Place a ";" in front of this line and then insert a carriage return and type the line again without the ";". o Change the new shell= line to "shell=progman.exe". When you are finished the lines should look as follows: ;shell=XXXXXXX shell=progman.exe Save the file and re-start Windows. Then click on Reading Blaster icon, or run the installation program. To return to your original program shell: o Open the SYSTEM.INI file using your text editor. o Delete the ":" in front of the old shell=XXXXXXX". o Place a ";" in front of the line which reads "shell=progman.exe". o Save the file and re-start Windows. PC TOOLS VSAFE and MS-DOS VSAFE PC Tools VSAFE or MS-DOS 6.0 VSAFE may interfere with the install process. To disable VSAFE before installing "Reading Blaster: Invasion of the Word Snatchers", exit Windows and type VSAFE /U, then press Enter. Restart your computer after installation of Reading Blaster: Invasion of the Word Snatchers to turn PC Tools VSAFE or MS-DOS VSAFE back on. ERROR MESSAGES If you receive an error message specifying a particular file name, check that the following files are installed: CTL3DV2.DLL installed to WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory RBLASTER.INI installed to WINDOWS directory If either of these files are missing, run Setup again to re- install them, or you may copy them directly from installation disk #1 or your CD. Uninstall --------- Uninstall can be used to completely remove all "Reading Blaster: Invasion of the Word Snatchers" files and subdirectories as well as the program group and RBLASTER.INI files. To uninstall "Invasion of the Word Snatchers": o Insert Disk#1 or your CD into the correct drive. o From File Manager, click on the correct drive letter. o From File Manager, choose File - Run and type "SETUP UNINSTALL". If you encounter an error message while running uninstall: o Check to see that all user created files have been removed from the Reading Blaster subdirectory. Uninstall will not delete files created by the user. User files will have the extension ".dat". o Check to see that the file "RBLASTER.INI" exists in your Windows directory and that the line "UserDir=" points to the RBLASTER directory on your hard drive. To delete all "Invasion of the Word Snatchers" files manually: o Run the Windows File Manager (or other third party file utility) and highlight the "RBLASTER" directory. Then choose File Delete from the menu options. o Locate the file "RBLASTER.INI" in the Windows directory and delete it. o From Program Manager (or third party shell) highlight the "Reading Blaster" program group (while minimized) and choose File Delete.
